Gingerbread Townhouse

I made a scale model gingerbread replica of my townhouse! It was such a fun project to do during pandemic Christmas! Then, when we sold the home a couple months later, this gingerbread model sat proudly in the kitchen for prospective buyers to see as they toured the house.

MODELING, BAKING AND CUTTING: I started by making a rough scale model of the house, using the blueprints from construction. I converted my hand drawings into a computer model using Microsoft Visio. I laid the cut out prints on top of the rolled out dough (this recipe) and hand cut the pieces. Before baking, I cut the windows and filled them with Jolly Ranchers. After the pieces cooled (and curled a bit…oops), I painted them with thinned royal icing.

BUILDING: I slowly constructed the house pieces, a level at a time. I attached little pieces of cookie with royal icing on the inside to act as structural bumpers to hold up the roof.

ADDING LITTLE DETAILS: The townhouse has a rooftop garden and small patio in back with a vertical garden along the fence. I made green hard candy and shaped it while it cooled to construct the plants. The tiny red dots on the plants are the strawberries and tomatoes. The wildlife is included too! Notice the little squirrel on the fence and the crow on the roof.
